Voting: Self-governance in action
Self-governance guides our nation. Our country’s Founders affirmed its central role in the formation of our country in the Declaration of Independence when they asserted that to secure our freedoms our government must derive its just powers from “the consent of the governed.” Voting is an important way we participate in our system of self-governance.

The recent Republican loss of both the House and Senate was probably the most deserved of any loss in American political history. Never before had the GOP had the chance to do so much good and did so little. We voted for a change in 1994, in 1996 and again in 2000, and they kept giving us the same old program of deficit spending, bigger and more intrusive government, higher taxes and the list goes on. In short, the GOP changed the direction from bad to worse and then pretended that they were doing what the people wanted.

Biden budget is unaffordable
The White House recently released its Fiscal Year (FY) 2024 budget proposal a month late, and it would run our country deeper in debt. It would drive up federal spending to $6.9 trillion, while deficits would rise to more than $2 trillion by FY 2033. Interest on federal debt will skyrocket from $661 billion this year to more than $10 trillion over the next ten years. To make matters worse, the President’s budget calls for nearly $5 trillion in new and increased taxes to help fuel tax-and-spend proposals. We simply cannot afford this.

Tax policy that will fuel a healthier Idaho economy
I am honored to continue to serve Idahoans as Ranking Member of the U.S. Senate Finance Committee in the 118th Congress. The Finance Committee has the largest jurisdiction of any congressional committee, overseeing all tax policy and giving Idaho a pivotal role in affecting policy shaping our nation’s economy. As this Congress gets underway, the following are my tax policy priorities to fuel a healthy economy.
Why did the IRS destroy 30 million paper returns?
Americans spend millions of hours and billions of dollars filing their taxes. At the very least the Internal Revenue Service should open, read, process and protect what Americans send them.
