Shook Twins: Homegrown favorites return to the Pearl for Thanksgiving concert
Most of us know the Shook Twins, Katelyn and Laurie Shook…at least, some of us seem to have known them as we watched them growing up in the 80’s and 90’s. Before they came on the music scene, they danced around the halls of Bonners Ferry High School like two little princesses, visiting the school with their teacher parents, Patty and Dan Shook. Even then, they had celebrity status. As the years pass, we continue to celebrate the amazing talent and accomplishment of these two young women: musicians with incredible harmonies and eclectic sound.

Setting sturgeon loose
BONNERS FERRY — Eight-year-old Ella Alexander gently scooped the young Kootenai white sturgeon from one of the waiting buckets, carried it carefully to water’s edge at the Waterways Boat Launch, and under the watchful eyes of Mark Elliston, Jr., Aquacultural Technician for the Kootenai Tribe — she released the juvenile fish into the Kootenai River to begin its new life. Ella went back, fish after fish, naming each one as she turned it loose.

Supreme Court mulls federal water rules in Priest Lake case
Case could provide opportunity for court to rein in what types of waters are subject to a provision of Clean Water Act known as ‘Waters of the United States’
The U.S. Supreme Court opened its term Monday with an Idaho case that could significantly restrict the federal government’s power to enforce clean water laws and prove crucial in determining wetland protections. The oral arguments came just months after the court’s 6-3 conservative majority limited executive authority to address climate change in a case involving federal regulation of greenhouse gases. The clean water case, brought by an Idaho couple seeking to build a house on a plot of land they bought near Priest Lake in the state’s panhandle, provides an opportunity for the court to rein in what types of waters are subject to a provision of the Clean Water Act known as “Waters of the United States.”

What's the buzz? Yellow jackets, wasps
BONNERS FERRY — Yes, I have found through a “stinging” introduction that the yellow jacket is a North Idaho predatory insect that builds a large nest to house the colony. My first encounter with a yellow jacket in Boundary County was when I was trying to plug in my waterfall pump and failed to realize wasps were building a small nest in the secluded area around the electrical plugin. I was stung three times in the thumb before I could say “I’m outta here."
