Startled by a starling leads to a special moment
Last week I was driving on a gravel road by Myrtle creek when I noticed a 12 foot tall old tree stump or snag. It had been dead for years and had several round holes visible, seemingly the size to fit a bird. I started to study the tree when on the northwest side I saw two small yellow beaks and then two heads and soon another head trying to peek out. Just when I realized there were three young birds waiting for their mother to feed them the mother showed up, landed on the top of the old wooden tree and gave me a scolding. I was startled by her aggressive action. I was impressed with her shiny purple black feathers, long and pointed yellow bill and short tail. However, I quickly reviewed my “Birds of Idaho” book to discover that she was a European Starling. I was startled by a Starling!

2015 Drought producing bark beetle issues with Panhandle conifers
University of Idaho Extension, Idaho Department of Lands, and U.S. Forest Service offices in our region are currently getting inundated by calls about dead and dying conifers. Most of these trees are being killed by bark beetles, but the real culprit is stress from last summer’s drought and overstocking. If dry conditions continue this summer and fall, the number of trees killed by bark beetles could increase.

BCSD wants kids in schools, you can help
Over the last 2.5 weeks, we have continued to see an increase in the number of staff and students with COVID-19. You might be saying, “I am tired of dealing with this, stop trying to create fear, it’s just the flu.” Others might be saying, “This is serious. Why aren’t you doing more? Stop messing around.” The reality is our School Board is working hard to make decisions based on local community conditions and guidance from health professionals.
