Woodward is the best Idaho Senate candidate

I met Jim Woodward when he was first running for office. He impressed me with his kindness and genuine interest in my thoughts and opinions. This was true even after his election. A lifelong resident of North Idaho, Jim truly cares about his neighbors. He listens and represents us well in Boise.

There is a mouse in the house!

Actually he wasn’t in the house, he was in the garage and in a six-gallon plastic bucket, which somehow he placed himself into and couldn’t get out. My wife alerted me to his presence with a loud exclamation, “You better come out here and see what is in the bucket.”

Two views of the county fair

I have been coming to our local fair since I was very small. Probably, since I was born. I have enjoyed it so much over the years that this year I decided to sign up to be fair royalty. This way I can participate and help out with a lot of the fair activities. The fair is made up of many volunteers and I enjoy volunteering, so I wanted to be one to help those people out. The more community support our fair has the bigger and better it is. As early as I can remember I have participated in the pet show, blueberry pie eating contest, zucchini race, airplane contest and family fun night. I have entered drawings, vegetables, photos and animals in open class. Through 4-H I have entered sewing, pottery, vet science, drawings, entomology (bugs), geese, chickens, goats and rabbits. The fair is a great way for the community, FFA and 4-H to share their animals, produce and various projects. This year I will also be entering some projects through open class and some through 4-H.

BONNERS FERRY — Cotton candy and clowns. Tigers and trapeze artists. These are among the first things to come to mind when hearing the word “circus.” This year, Bonners Ferry was host to not one, but two circuses, only days apart.

Recipe: Carrot Pancakes add new flavors to a breakfast staple

I am finishing off the carrots from my winter dig, the few that the pocket gophers left for me. This pancake batter is thick so it is best to make small pancakes so that they cook all the way through. Adding walnuts to your maple syrup is a special treat.

Spotted Towhee: The bird with a “bunny hop”

Recently I heard a rattling song, coming from the ground under one of our bird feeders. Then I noticed a colorful bird about eight inches long. It was a striking bird with a black head, white spotted black wings, white wing bars, and a dark rusty colored body. It had a contrasting white breast and underparts and white was found along the sides of its tail. It had noticeable and distinctive red eyes. A female hopped up beside him and her color was duller, a dark brown instead of black, and her head was more grayish.
