Widow appreciates Head Start naming new building in husband's memory

I appreciate the many community leaders for your tireless effort in making a reality the Julien Bucher Early Learning Center to house the Head Start. Especially for honoring my husband's memory by placing his name there. It is a wonderful tribute. Also to the many, many anonymous contributors to this project.

End of an era: Judge Buchanan to retire in January

“I didn’t know any lawyers but people always told me I should be a lawyer because I debate all the time,” Buchanan said. “So, I took the LSAT test and did well and ended up going to law school.” The move paid off. After almost 30 years as a judge, Buchanan will retire Jan. 30, 2023 – ten years to the day after she first took the job. A district judge must serve 10 years before they can retire. Buchanan, who is at least a third-generation Idahoan, grew up in Moscow and went to law school at University of Idaho and then clerked for a few years at the Idaho Supreme Court.

Removing monuments to white supremacism

Across the South, in response to racist violence, protesters and city officials have taken down statues of Confederate leaders and soldiers — 36 in 2017 and 26 so far in 2020. Over 700 Confederate monuments remain. History can help us understand why their removal is critical.

Farm to Market Grains: your local, homegrown flour source

Flour is one of the primary staples of a well-stocked kitchen, and there are a handful of industrial mills with recognizable names that produce the majority of the flour available in the United States: Gold Medal, King Arthur and Pilsbury, to name a few. There are also, however, a few small-scale, family-run mills producing quality, whole grain flour around the country, and one of them is located right here in Boundary County less than five miles from the Canadian Border.
