IRA green energy tax provisions hurt America, help China

Members of Congress on both sides of the aisle have long recognized the need to reform our energy tax laws. But rather than work on stakeholder-informed, bipartisan energy tax policies that would support a technology-neutral approach, Democrats pursued a partisan path through their misnamed Inflation Reduction Act (IRA). Republicans warned the IRA would take us down a dangerous, fiscally irresponsible path to provide ever-ballooning subsidies, antagonize allies and, ironically, reward the very industries that are reliant on China. Unfortunately, what we warned of has come to pass, leaving Americans to deal with the fallout of these predicted consequences:

The Coalition for a Prosperous America (CPA) sent a letter to U.S. Senator Ron Wyden (D-OR), Chairman of the Senate Committee on Finance, outlining seven serious concerns with his recently introduced Trade Preferences and American Manufacturing Competitiveness Act of 2021. The legislation would update and renew the Generalized System of Preferences (GSP) and Miscellaneous Tariff Bill (MTB).

Newport hospital reopens birthing center

The new birthing center hadn't been open long when the Newport hospital got its first customer. The center, which was celebrated at a brief grand reopening ceremony, opened June 1 after closing in 2022. "Most rural hospitals are choosing to close their obstetrics units, but through the commitment of our board and our teams, we are choosing to keep this service in the community," Merry-Ann Keane, Newport Hospital and Health Services CEO, said.
