Steve Johnson: Voters’ choice

During the primary campaign, candidate Scott Herndon demonstrated viciousness and untruthfulness in his attacks on the incumbent senator. A lengthy text from him that blocked my reply made it clear he didn’t want to hear from me; his mind was set. Such absolutism and extremism are evident in his agenda: he would reject funding for Medicaid, public education, Meals on Wheels, highway and road improvements, and veterans’ services, among others. He believes a woman has no right to choose under any scenario. He wants to sell our public lands into private hands.

October is Disability Awareness & History Month

‘Bonners Ferry Social; because loneliness is the only disability’

Pamela Beck, known fondly as Candy Beck, is the owner-operator of Bonners Ferry Social, a community access-based program for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. For a few hours Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday, she makes her rounds picking up a small group of individuals who are otherwise mostly homebound. They make their way around the community, shopping at thrift stores, visiting friends, dining in the local cafes or the senior center. Many an afternoon is spent at the library’s fab lab and bowling is a favorite pastime in the winter. Recently some of the group participated in the local chapter of Special Olympics.

Supreme Court mulls federal water rules in Priest Lake case

Case could provide opportunity for court to rein in what types of waters are subject to a provision of Clean Water Act known as ‘Waters of the United States’

The U.S. Supreme Court opened its term Monday with an Idaho case that could significantly restrict the federal government’s power to enforce clean water laws and prove crucial in determining wetland protections. The oral arguments came just months after the court’s 6-3 conservative majority limited executive authority to address climate change in a case involving federal regulation of greenhouse gases. The clean water case, brought by an Idaho couple seeking to build a house on a plot of land they bought near Priest Lake in the state’s panhandle, provides an opportunity for the court to rein in what types of waters are subject to a provision of the Clean Water Act known as “Waters of the United States.”

End of an era: Judge Buchanan to retire in January

“I didn’t know any lawyers but people always told me I should be a lawyer because I debate all the time,” Buchanan said. “So, I took the LSAT test and did well and ended up going to law school.” The move paid off. After almost 30 years as a judge, Buchanan will retire Jan. 30, 2023 – ten years to the day after she first took the job. A district judge must serve 10 years before they can retire. Buchanan, who is at least a third-generation Idahoan, grew up in Moscow and went to law school at University of Idaho and then clerked for a few years at the Idaho Supreme Court.
