Panelists ask Idaho Legislature to consider investments in education rather than tax cuts

Concerns about the economy, budget outlooks, property taxes and other subjects were the focus of the 76th annual Associated Taxpayers of Idaho Conference on Wednesday, with legislators and newly elected officials in attendance about a month before the next legislative session begins. The Associated Taxpayers of Idaho is a nonprofit organization that produces reports related to state and local tax policy and distributes them to members. Incoming Lt. Gov. Tackling tax complexity for Idaho's small businesses

Small businesses drive our economy, and are particularly essential to Idaho’s economy. More than 99 percent of Idaho’s businesses are small businesses, employing over 347,000 Idahoans and spurring local innovation. Therefore, Congress must extend and build on tax relief that emboldens these economic engines to grow U.S. jobs, manufacturing here at home and higher wages for hardworking families.

We cannot wait around for an economic earthquake

Fitch Ratings’ recent downgrade of our country’s currency default rating should come as no surprise, especially when considering the rating’s key drivers. This includes the federal government’s last-minute and reckless mismanagement of enormous fiscal policy issues and the predicted rise of the deficit to an astounding 5.8 percent of the gross domestic product in fiscal year 2023. Cumulative debt is projected to exceed the country’s GDP next year. Many of us have been warning about these economic tremors for years, and we must act now to prevent further fiscal disaster.

1. Our nation is facing very troublesome times on many fronts. The importance that we follow the Constitution and the right principles of governing has never been greater. I am committed more than ever to the values that first prompted me to run for the Senate: limited government, low taxes, less spending and individual freedom. Americans must speak out strongly today to preserve and defend our Constitution and the system of limited government and freedom.
