Heading into the home stretch at Bonners Ferry High School

Hello Bonners Ferry. The mad dash to the end is under way so hold on. Let’s start with recent events. Congratulations to the Senior class advisors for another great Prom. It is always a joy to see everyone dressed so nice and having a good time. It was also my privilege to escort our Junior Top Scholars to their award ceremony. The top ten in the Junior class are invited to NIC to receive a medallion and recognition along with all the Top Scholars from around the region. It is a great way to recognize all the hard work they have done to keep their grades up. Not to be left out, we honored two Seniors at the annual NISTAR banquet. NISTAR stands for North Idaho Student Teacher Achievement Award. Two seniors are chosen based on their GPA and their involvement in extracurricular activities. Congratulations to Abby Davis, and her teacher Tommy Jacobs. Congratulations to Erica Wood and her teacher Julie Smith.

Why is that white truck spraying along county roads and what is he using?

You may have seen a Boundary County truck out spraying roadsides and have wondered why? State law requires that Noxious Weeds be controlled. Idaho state statute title 22, chapter 24, list all the responsibilities of county governments and landowners. So, what is a noxious weed? Noxious is a legal term that the Idaho State Department of Agriculture (ISDA) uses to classify a plant that is considered to be injurious to public health, agriculture, recreation, wildlife, or property. The state has 67 weeds on the Noxious weed list. Boundary County has approximately 32 of these weeds. Noxious weeds are non-native invasive plants that came from other parts of the world. Some noxious weeds were brought to the United States as ornamentals, came in ship ballast water, packing material, or in seed mixes. When these plants were introduced here, they didn’t have their natural “predators” with them to keep the populations in control. These weeds outcompete the native species of plants. Weeds are typically spread by seed dispersal. The wind, water, animals, machinery, and people carry seed from one location to another. Some weeds can also spread from plant parts. It is estimated that Noxious Weeds cost Idahoans over $300 million dollars each year.

Sheriff's Office investigating missing person case

The Boundary County Sheriff's Office is conducting an investigation in the missing person's case of Michael Rocha. Rocha, 58, has been missing since Nov. 8. He is not a permanent resident of Boundary County, but was staying with different friends in the area. The last contact the BCSO had with Rocha was when deputies responded to a call for assistance by a relative of Rocha. Ambulance and police responded, but Rocha declined any assistance and later disappeared. The city has since then started an investigation trying to find previous contacts and friends. A forensic team was dispatched at a residence in the Deep Creek Loop and Moravia Road area looking for evidence. The case is still active; deputies are following up on clues found. Rocha is also currently listed on the Idaho State Police endangered records, people who are missing under circumstances indicating that his or her physical safety is in danger.
