Being in the proud profession of teaching and learning for 40 years now, I will start with a multiple choice question, “What did I learn this year?” Select one: A) Learning never stops, B) Communication is key, C) Mistakes are educational, D) Respect and trust are earned, or E) All of the above. Easy enough question even though the answers are sometimes hard to come by! Overall, we had a wonderful school year and thanks to all the answers listed above, this will continue into 2017-2018 and beyond. As I will always do, let’s base our progress on safe, civil and productive actions.

Steve Tanner (D), 63 Candidate for State Senator for Legislative District One Log home builder and timber products manufacturer

1. Samuel Adams said “If ever a time should come, when vain and aspiring men shall possess the highest seats in Government, our country will stand in need of its experienced patriots to prevent its ruin.” That time has come. The Supreme Court continues to base its opinions upon political correctness, not upon the original intent of the Constitution. Last year’s “gay marriage” decision was another watershed issue in our nation’s clear descent away from truth and right. The State has become the mother that seeks to provide cradle to grave guidance and protection, while freedom and responsibly are outdated and even outlawed.

UI settles students' free speech lawsuit

The University of Idaho will pay $90,000 to settle a lawsuit from members of a Christian law students' organization who claimed their freedom of speech was violated when the school issued no-contact orders against them. The settlement was filed in Idaho's U.S. District Court this week. It resolves a suit brought by three student members of the Christian Legal Society and the law school professor who serves as their faculty advisor. The group sued in April, contending the university illegally punished them for expressing their religious beliefs. Attorneys for the University of Idaho noted in court documents that the no-contact orders were issued after another student reported feeling harassed by some in the group.
