Voter turnout expected to double in West Bonner recall election

Bonner County officials expect twice the voter turnout for next week’s recall election than two years ago, when the school board trustees were first elected. “There’s huge interest in this,” said Bonner County Clerk Michael Rosedale. Embattled West Bonner chairman Keith Rutledge and vice chairwoman Susan Brown will learn their fate Tuesday when five voting precincts close at 8 p.m. Displeased patrons and parents mounted an effort to recall them following the controversial hiring of new superintendent Branden Durst.

Towns could save themselves from wildfire — if they knew about this money

U.S. Forest Service is distributing $1 billion to help communities protect themselves during fire season

There’s actually a huge pot of federal money available to communities across the country — an unprecedented amount that would allow towns to quickly tackle work that otherwise would take decades. But local leaders in Packwood, which has fewer than 1,200 residents, and some other areas say they haven’t heard of the program, and most haven’t drafted the protection plans needed to apply for grants.

Initiative drive is good news for voters

Friday, August 18, Luke Mayville, head of non-partisan Reclaim Idaho, will be in Bonners Ferry to kick off the initiative petition drive to give all Idaho voters freedom to vote in one open primary which combines all parties and independent candidates. Currently, a quarter million independent voters are unable to vote in a closed party primary. Many signatures from a majority of the districts are required to get this initiative onto the 2024 general election ballot; once on this ballot, a majority of the voters need to approve, then it becomes law.
