Painted turtles bask in Boundary County sun

On a trip around the Kootenai National Wildlife Refuge this past week-end I noticed a number of turtles basking in the sun on a log in a pond of water beside a gravel road. On a closer look I noticed the turtles were painted turtles. The Painted Turtle is the only species of turtle that occurs naturally in Idaho so identifying them is simple. Although, due to escaped pets and introduced species, one must become familiar with the general characteristics of Painted Turtles to avoid confusing them with such turtles a Box Turtles, and Red-eared Sliders (both common pet species).

The ring-necked pheasant: a stroll down memory lane

In the fall mornings and evenings in Boundary County, moose, elk, coyotes, mule, and white-tailed deer might be seen. Osprey and shorebirds depart early in the season, while duck migration peaks in early November. Bald eagles arrive at the same time in search of sick or injured ducks that make an easy meal. However, it was a ring-necked pheasant that caught my attention last week as I was traveling the Farm to Market road in northern Boundary County.

Garter snakes: Good for the garden!

Recently I saw a garter snake about three feet long wriggling across my driveway, probably going from one flower garden to another. I quickly retrieved my camera and snapped a picture as he paused in his journey.

Montana woman identified

( ▶️ Audio story available.) Mildred Hubertz was 59 when she went missing from St. Ignatius, Mont., in 1968. In November 1982, hunters near Newport, Wash., — an almost four-hour drive from the small town 40 miles from Missoula — found a partial human skull in a remote wooded area north of the small Pend Oreille County community.
