Last week, two special City Council meetings were held to discuss a local option tax and land use planning map. Both items were significant and urgent. Council scheduled these meetings, in advance, knowing some members found attendance at an Oregon golf event a higher priority.

I am honored to continue to serve Idahoans as Ranking Member of the U.S. Senate Finance Committee in the 118th Congress. Bill to eliminate two school election dates passes house

Legislation which would eliminate two of Idaho’s four school bond and levy elections dates passed in the Idaho House of Representatives on Feb. 10. House bill 58, which would eliminate election dates in March and August, now heads to the Idaho State Senate before becoming law.

City workshops LOT for general fund

The Bonners Ferry City Council plans to put a 1% local option tax on the ballot on taxable goods up to $1,000, before voters, but has yet to vote on the proposed tax. The LOT would be for a term of 10 years and would fund fire protection, roads, buildings, grounds, law enforcement and capital operation expenses for the three departments as well as property tax relief.

District cognizant of Title IX duties

In 1972, with urging from the public, Representative Mink’s bill to bring equity opportunities in education and activities for girls and women, Congress passed Title IX which was signed into law by President Nixon. This was a game-changer for the nation’s girls and women.

Vote no on supplemental levy

Property owners are not responsible for funding schools, the state is. Levy money funds the job factory bloating school payroll with more liberal-minded teachers and unnecessary administrators. Early release schedules appease teachers' unions but reduce needed student class time, performance, and equal education.

In December, Congress passed and the President signed into law the Fiscal Year (FY) 2023 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). This yearly legislation backs this sensible approach--of speaking courteously, dealing fairly, and keeping ourselves armed and ready--highlighted in President Roosevelt’s speech as it meets Congress’s responsibility spelled out in our Constitution “to provide for the common Defense and general Welfare of the United States.”

N. Idaho systems awarded DEQ grants

A trio of North Idaho systems are among the half-dozen selected for grants to fund studies to evaluate community drinking water and wastewater systems. The Idaho Department of Environmental Quality announced the award of $191,300 to six drinking water and wastewater systems on Wednesday. Among those selected for a grant were the Sagle Valley Water and Sewer District in Bonner County, the Curley Creek Water Association in Boundary County, and the Kingston Water District in Shoshone County.
