State of Deer and Elk: Counting herds, and how hunters help through mandatory hunter reports

Biologists use a variety of methods to know the health of the herds, and hunters play an important role

Deer and elk live throughout Idaho in habitats ranging from desert to mixed conifer forests, and a big part of a wildlife manager’s job is to estimate how many are out there. What role do hunters play in that? More than you might realize. If each deer and elk hunter spends a few moments filling out a mandatory hunter report, they make a valuable contribution to wildlife management that can lead to more hunting opportunity, but more on that later.

IDFG: Snapping turtles pose problem in area

McCormack, a non-game biologist for Fish and Game in the Idaho Panhandle, said the turtles are, for now, minor pests – as far as IDFG can tell. Since they pose a threat to many native species, Fish and Game is hoping to nip them in the bud next spring, before anything could get too out of hand. “The main issue they pose,” he said, “is that they are pretty effective predators.” While snapping turtles are not aggressive, they can be dangerous especially for curious pets or kids, McCormack said. The conservation officer also warned that if someone puts their finger too close and the snapping turtle is big enough, they could lose their finger.

Inside Idaho's $410 million education bill

The Legislature’s Sept. 1 special session was a done deal. But that didn’t stop about 650 Idahoans from calling or emailing Gov. Brad Little’s office about his plan to pour state surplus dollars into tax cuts and education spending. A majority of the calls and emails ran against Little’s proposal — which became House Bill 1, the lone bill considered and passed during the one-day session.
