Initiative drive is good news for voters
Friday, August 18, Luke Mayville, head of non-partisan Reclaim Idaho, will be in Bonners Ferry to kick off the initiative petition drive to give all Idaho voters freedom to vote in one open primary which combines all parties and independent candidates. Currently, a quarter million independent voters are unable to vote in a closed party primary. Many signatures from a majority of the districts are required to get this initiative onto the 2024 general election ballot; once on this ballot, a majority of the voters need to approve, then it becomes law.

We cannot wait around for an economic earthquake
Fitch Ratings’ recent downgrade of our country’s currency default rating should come as no surprise, especially when considering the rating’s key drivers. This includes the federal government’s last-minute and reckless mismanagement of enormous fiscal policy issues and the predicted rise of the deficit to an astounding 5.8 percent of the gross domestic product in fiscal year 2023. Cumulative debt is projected to exceed the country’s GDP next year. Many of us have been warning about these economic tremors for years, and we must act now to prevent further fiscal disaster.

Durst escalates dispute with state education leaders
While West Bonner considers legal action against the state, superintendent Branden Durst is delaying his promise to lead the district with an emergency certificate. Durst disagrees with the opinion of state education leaders. He surmised that a district cannot have two superintendents with emergency certificates — his certificate (if granted) and the one held by his predecessor Susan Luckey, who was appointed interim superintendent from March through June, following the resignation of Jackie Branum.
