Know signs for grizzly bears
Seeing grizzly bear tracks in the snow on the trail always heightens my awareness, especially relatively fresh tracks where the claw marks can still be seen. The scenarios of what could happen start rolling through my head as I begin to make more noise.

A blackbird that sounds like a rusty farm gate opening
Recently while on a photo field trip I came across a flock of birds by the Kootenai National Wildlife Refuge. The birds in a flock of about 50 had golden heads, a white patch on black wings, and a call that sounded like a rusty farm gate opening, the yellow-headed blackbird demands your attention. They were an impressive flock as the group seemed to roll across the wetlands and field beside the road. Each bird would glean seeds from the ground, and then leapfrog over its flock mates to the front edge of the ever-advancing troupe.

The lark of the meadows
Meadowlarks have a way to bring a song into your day. I remember as a boy listening to the buoyant, flute-like melody of the Western Meadowlark ringing out across a field in May outside my fifth grade classroom in a rural school. A song like that can brighten anyone’s day.

The western bluebird: one of nature's finest!
Last Friday was a cloudy, rainy, chilly day and my mood matched the weather. Then I saw a western bluebird, and for the rest of the day I felt it was a “bluebird day” in spite of the weather. I was in the area of McArthur Lake when a male and female western bluebird landed in a budding tree nearby. Fortunately for me they were within camera range as I clicked away.

Tackling tax complexity for Idaho's small businesses
Small businesses drive our economy, and are particularly essential to Idaho’s economy. More than 99 percent of Idaho’s businesses are small businesses, employing over 347,000 Idahoans and spurring local innovation. Therefore, Congress must extend and build on tax relief that emboldens these economic engines to grow U.S. jobs, manufacturing here at home and higher wages for hardworking families.
