Sheriff: Talk safety with teen drivers

A new season is almost upon us at fair time, and to some the dreaded words “back to school” are starting to be heard. It is a sign that summer is fast coming to a close and fall will be here before we know it. Most of us are not ready for summer to end yet, but soon it will. Don’t get me wrong, I look forward to fall, it is one of my favorite seasons — fresh fall air, football, cooler days, hunting season.

Thursday, friends and family — and fellow judges — watched Jensen become the newest district judge to serve Bonner and Boundary counties. She is only the 14th person to become a district judge in Sandpoint in the past 132 years. District judges from throughout the five northern counties came together to celebrate Jensen's formal swearing-in before a packed courtroom filled with friends, family and numerous country officials. While her parents, Terry and Lynn Jensen; husband, in-laws and aunt were in the courtroom, other family members attended via Zoom and join in the ceremony.

Startled by a starling leads to a special moment

Last week I was driving on a gravel road by Myrtle creek when I noticed a 12 foot tall old tree stump or snag. It had been dead for years and had several round holes visible, seemingly the size to fit a bird. I started to study the tree when on the northwest side I saw two small yellow beaks and then two heads and soon another head trying to peek out. Just when I realized there were three young birds waiting for their mother to feed them the mother showed up, landed on the top of the old wooden tree and gave me a scolding. I was startled by her aggressive action. I was impressed with her shiny purple black feathers, long and pointed yellow bill and short tail. However, I quickly reviewed my “Birds of Idaho” book to discover that she was a European Starling. I was startled by a Starling!

Will you please ask your readers if any of them know of any “lost” ski areas? I am working with two other authors, Jerry Painter of Idaho Falls, and my son Doug Fuller of Salt Lake City, Ut, on a book of history of Idaho downhill ski areas.

A great school year coming to an end at Valley View

As I wrap up my first year as principal of Valley View Elementary School (VVES) I feel incredibly blessed to work with such great staff, students, and parents. The people in Bonners Ferry have received my family with open arms and for that I am thankful.

January news from BFHS

Warm Holiday Greetings from Bonners Ferry High School. I would like to take this opportunity to reflect and share. Any position in education comes with its own unique amount of adversity, and my position as Principal at BFHS is no different. However, I can’t quantify the amount of support, feedback, and concern I have been given from this community in a respectful and appropriate manner. My hat is off to the students, teachers, parents, and community members for trusting me to hear them and being patient enough to allow me to “get it right.” We have made some improvements to the security of our building with some serious support from our Superintendent, Gary Pflueger, and our School Board Trustees.
