Getting antsy: Ants in the house

Ants are among the most successful insects, out numbering all other individual animals combined. Their presence in nature is essential to the well-being of the garden and environment. But they are not welcome in our house.

Thatching ant hills only a portion of the nest

Anyone who’s walked through the pine forests of Boundary County has seen them, the large, often knee high mounds of pine needles and other forest debris, which, on a sunny day, are swarming with ants. These are the homes of thatching ants. In bad weather these appear to be lifeless piles of debris, but on sunny days they can be boiling with activity. Thatching ant colonies are abundant, especially in Jack Pine forests wherever there is a site that receives good sunshine. The edges of roads and snowmobile trails are great spots to find them. Warmth from the sun is an important resource for the developing eggs and larvae.

Message to IRS: Uphold hardworking Idaho taxpayers' rights

The Internal Revenue Code requires the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Commissioner, and all IRS employees, to ‘act in accord’ with codified taxpayer rights, including: the right to be informed; the right to quality service; the right to challenge the position of the IRS and be heard; the right to privacy; and the right to confidentiality.

The IRS needs more carrots rather than sticks

National Taxpayer Advocate Erin Collins has “urged” Congress to reallocate some of the Internal Revenue Service’s (IRS) enforcement funding to better taxpayer services and modernize IRS systems because the slug of Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) funding “disproportionately” favored enforcement. Her argument is persuasive:

IRS must act quickly to help resolve identity theft cases

The Internal Revenue Service has been flush with funds since the Biden Administration enacted an incredible $80 billion in addition to the agency’s $12.3 billion annual budget. Despite these funds being described as a cure-all for the IRS’s shortcomings, some customer service has actually worsened. One in particular is the resolution of identity theft cases, sometimes leaving identity theft victims in stressful financial limbo for nearly two years.

IRS must better protect Idaho taxpayers

Taxpayers have certain fundamental rights when it comes to dealing with the Internal Revenue Service, including the right to privacy and the right to confidentiality. From serious breaches of confidential taxpayer data and document mismanagement to poor cybersecurity training and infrastructure vulnerabilities, the IRS has a decades-long and troubled history with adequately protecting American taxpayers’ information. One particularly egregious event in recent history was the unauthorized disclosure of private, legally-protected IRS data to online news source ProPublica — an incident of which little has been revealed, despite an ongoing, years-long investigation by multiple agencies.

IRS's destruction of documents hurt taxpayers

In 2021, the Internal Revenue Service made an unwise — and frankly, disturbing — decision to intentionally destroy 30 million paper-filed tax documents without processing them.

Why did the IRS destroy 30 million paper returns?

Americans spend millions of hours and billions of dollars filing their taxes. At the very least the Internal Revenue Service should open, read, process and protect what Americans send them.

It's time to end the Direct File program

In May, the U.S. Department of the Treasury and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) made the mistake of converting the Direct File pilot program into a permanent, unauthorized, multibillion-dollar government detour into the tax preparation business.

Tax policy that will fuel a healthier Idaho economy

I am honored to continue to serve Idahoans as Ranking Member of the U.S. Senate Finance Committee in the 118th Congress. The Finance Committee has the largest jurisdiction of any congressional committee, overseeing all tax policy and giving Idaho a pivotal role in affecting policy shaping our nation’s economy. As this Congress gets underway, the following are my tax policy priorities to fuel a healthy economy.

Tax audit directive raises more questions than answers

President Biden has hit the campaign trail touting the so-called victories of “Bidenomics.” However, for most Idahoans, Bidenomics has meant record-high grocery bills, soaring housing costs, a $33 trillion national debt and a higher tax burden.
