Meet the small, but lethal, sharp-shinned hawk

I was watching my bird feeders last week when suddenly a small hawk landed on a branch above the feeders and set quietly blending into the branches of the ponderosa pine. It was a sharp-shinned hawk (accipiter striatus) — they are about the size of a blue jay, but considerably more lethal. He is an excellent hunter and birds make up most of his diet.

A GREAT BIRD THAT CAN BARK LIKE A DOG

One early morning last week when I looked out at our coy pond beside the house, I was amazed to see a tall gray bird standing over the edge of the pond in total silence. He had a cautious and surreptitious action and movement, the caution and stealth of a hungry cat. It was a blueish gray bird with black eyebrows extended into several long plumes off the back of his head. He took a step closer to the pond and turned his long yellow bill toward me as he looked in my direction. I noticed the feathers at the base of the neck as it dropped down in a kind of necklace. I realized it was a Great Blue Heron and he was at the pond to get some easy fishing. Grabbing my camera I went out the front door to scare him away from the fish pond and caught some close up shots as he glided away with a squawk of discontent and no coy in his yellow beak.

News from Mt. Hall and Naples Elementary

February has been an unpredictable month of school, or lack of school I should say. I know students, staff, and parents are ready to get back to normal. Speaking of normal, this winter has been anything but. However, as I was shoveling the roofs of Naples Elementary and Mt Hall Elementary, I was touched by how many people turned out to help the schools. It was great reminder that it really does take a village. From the bottom of my heart, thank you to everyone who helped. Our kids really are worth whatever it takes.

Voter turnout expected to double in West Bonner recall election

Bonner County officials expect twice the voter turnout for next week’s recall election than two years ago, when the school board trustees were first elected. “There’s huge interest in this,” said Bonner County Clerk Michael Rosedale. Embattled West Bonner chairman Keith Rutledge and vice chairwoman Susan Brown will learn their fate Tuesday when five voting precincts close at 8 p.m. Displeased patrons and parents mounted an effort to recall them following the controversial hiring of new superintendent Branden Durst.
