When life feels rigged

The customer behind me joined the conversation, “You can have my tickets if you want to wait for them.” He’d overheard my plans for the million dollars we plan on winning through the grocery store’s Monopoly game and showed support. As I stood aside, an attempt to give the customer privacy while checking out, the level of awkward rose and I contemplated my “why”. Why would someone subject themselves to discomfort for something trivial? What felt like hours later and with more game pieces in hand I headed home with an answer to my “why”.

Meet Boundary County's own 'Batgirl'

BONNERS FERRY — A day in the life of a resident of Boundary County may look much like the last, and have the potential to carry over into the next day. Work, school, learning, and building relationships, are scattered through the many agendas of the community. There are daily and weekly routines that residents are used to, and straying from those can come with surprising consequences.

"I arrived in Sand Point the spring of 1891, looking for my friend Spence Smith...It took me six years to get here...my shoes were gone, one foot being wrapped in a deer hide and the other in a gunny sack...I was happy to find Spence at his tie camp...He decided to send me out on a grubstake and let me prospect."

Contemplating safe places and the library

For years now, I have been contemplating the situation of our library, all while attending story time with my children and enjoying the resources it has to offer my family. I am thankful to be acquainted with many people here in the county, and I have been listening and watching. Thoughts formed as I read reports, letters, and asked direct questions. As is often the case for me, the words came in the wee hours of the morning - a conveniently quiet time for a mama of young ones in a small home - so I started to write.

City to review utility policy

I am a 20-year resident of Moyie Springs. We have owned our home since 2001. In 2014, my husband passed away, leaving me a single income resident. Shortly thereafter, I lost my job. I found other work, but not at his $28 hr, nor my previous $14 hr rate. Conoco cannot afford those wages and I needed work no matter what the pay rate. I struggled through a year, cutting internet, cable, full coverage insurance, etc. I found myself sinking financially under my monthly obligations.
