NAPLES — While most people are aware that firefighters risk their lives on the job every day — battling burning buildings, wildland fires, and more — many do not think about the risks involved with getting to a scene in a timely manner. The fire engines are large vehicles that must maneuver through traffic safely and through all types of adverse weather conditions.

Character counts! When I go into the voting booth to select someone who will represent me, I want a person of character. Steve Johnson’s announcement to run a District 1 Senate write-in candidate against Scott Herndon is welcome news as voters now have a choice between someone of character and someone who goes as low as possible to win.

Last week while observing along the Kootenai River I saw a long-necked, nearly all-black water bird with white chin, neck, chest and yellow bill with unusually bright red eyes in the river next to the southern bank. The bird according to my “Birds of Idaho” Field Guide was a Western Grebe.
