Adoption provides opportunities to turn heartbreak into love and growth for Idaho children in need of a loving home and the families who are blessed with their additions. According to the Children’s Bureau, an office within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 353 children were adopted from foster care in Idaho in Fiscal Year (FY) 2020. Idaho children awaiting adoption, including those who have been abandoned and abused, have often overcome difficult experiences. Experts say a spike in demand due to recent rises in respiratory illness is behind the shortages. They also say parents have several alternatives to consider if they encounter empty store shelves. Your doctor may have some suggestions.

Military, federal workers deserve elimination of federal COVID-19 vaccine requirements
One may understandably, but unfortunately mistakenly, assume that at this point in the pandemic federal COVID-19 vaccination mandates have run their course, and Idahoans can freely choose whether they want to vaccinate or continue with vaccinations. However, some, including those who serve in our nation’s Armed Forces, continue to face disciplinary actions, trouble with security clearances, lost training and advancement opportunities or other negative consequences for choosing not to get vaccinated for COVID-19. A provision I backed requiring the U.S. Department of Defense to rescind the mandate that members of the Armed Forces be vaccinated for COVID-19 was included in the House and Senate negotiated National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for Fiscal Year 2023. This is a welcome first step in ending these types of mandates and the harm they have caused. However, the provision does not rescind the related penalties and forced separations imposed on military personnel, and we must not let up in repealing those penalties and reinstating all service members unfairly discharged.

Israel: Continued work to win the peace
These were the words of then President Franklin Delano Roosevelt in a broadcast to the American people on December 9, 1941, following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. In many ways, we continue to work to win the peace in the decades since. After Israel’s establishment in the aftermath of the end of World War II, Israel has been and continues to be one of the most important allies for the U.S. in an increasingly unstable and dangerous region. Continued support of Israel is vital to our national security as our country persists in working to win the peace.
