When Medicare’s prescription drug benefit, Part D, was created 20 years ago, the program was intended to protect Idaho seniors’ ability to access the pharmacy of their choice. Oversight and enforcement of these protections, however, have fallen short of that promise, forcing far too many independent pharmacies to close up shop.
Kootenai Valley Junior Rifle Club places fifth in the nation
After months of waiting the results are in — and the Kootenai Valley Rifle Club team is fifth in the nation. In spring 2023, Kootenai Valley Rifle Club members shot in the NRA sectional rifle match at their home range, joined by teams from Sandpoint and Coeur d’Alene. They competed with .22 caliber rifles, single shot, at a distance of 50 feet indoors. A sectional match is one in which a shooter obtains their national ranking. Matches are held across the United States, the scores are sent into the NRA then combined with others to see how everyone did.

West Bonner OKs vacancies in truncated meeting
Shortly before it was scheduled to start, the West Bonner school board meeting was paused for a phone call. Superintendent Branden Durst and trustees Margy Hall and Carlyn Barton then broke from a huddle near the front of the almost-full room and left the cafeteria.

BF mayor resigns due to conflict of interest, nepotism, hasn’t pulled candidacy
James “Dick” R. Staples resigned as Bonners Ferry mayor Friday, Sept. 22, due to the possibility a family member may receive a job at the city, creating a conflict of interest and violating Idaho nepotism law. However, Staples said he still plans to run for the position in the upcoming election, for which he is unopposed and will be sworn in as mayor in January 2024.

Saturday, Sept. 8, 2001: Bill and I went to the airport to pick up his son, Billy, and wife, Margie. They had flown in for a visit from Minneapolis, Minnesota. Margie was worried about flying because she was afraid they might get hijacked on the way. We all laughed at the idea of anyone hijacking an airplane in this day and age.

Court order forces board to cancel special meeting
A temporary restraining order was granted late Friday afternoon, barring the West Bonner County School District from making any changes to the board or authority given to Superintendent Brandon Durst before the recall of board chair Keith Rutledge and vice chair Susan Brown takes place on Thursday.

Filing deadline for candidates for the November 7, 2023 election are due on Friday September 8 to the respective taxing district office.

Search crews are currently looking for a missing man in the area of Shorty Peak, on the north western side of Boundary County.
