John wouldn’t hurt a housefly but one afternoon he tangled with the wrong guy and fell victim to robbery and minor bodily injury. John was homeless, lived on the street and usually carried his entire earthly possessions in a bedroll over his left shoulder. That is, until this other guy took possession by force. Whoosh, they were gone. Loss of his worldly goods and a black eye too, seemed hardly fair.

BONNERS FERRY — Big changes are happening with taxpayers this year. The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, being credited to President Donald Trump, has been in place since Jan. 1, 2018. It will affect most taxpayers for this year’s filings and the 2019 tax year.

Auxiliary Pie Sale moves to March
This year, the famous Boundary Community Hospital Auxiliary Pie and Dessert Sale will be on Monday, March 16, at the Seniors Hospitality Center at 6635 Lincoln Street. BONNERS FERRY — In the Jan. 1 BNSF train derailment, where the front locomotive ended up in the Kootenai River with the conductor and engineer initially trapped inside, the Boundary County Sheriff’s Marine Program played an important part, navigating treacherous waters at night with the Sheriff’s boat to reach the stranded BNSF employees and transfer them to safety.

A landmark to those who travel through U.S. Highway 95 in Bonners Ferry is the National Guard Armory building on the South Hill, located across the highway from the Middle School.

The Kootenai Tribe has informed the public the sturgeon in both hatcheries have been secured and in clean, safe water since the derailment of the BNSF train. Their project of preserving and reintroducing the sturgeon into the Kootenai River has been one of great success.

I had the after-holidays “HO-HUMS” BAD! The promised storm was probably not coming. Instead of arriving with a promised fury and much needed snowpack, it had resigned itself to a cloudy, overcast, foggy, dreary, leaden sky. I admit that it had taken control of my mood. I had been up since before dawn awaiting some sense of promise to the day, something that would shake the overhanging blight on my soul.

According to insider.com, Class A types of fire fueled by materials like wood, paper, clothing, trash or plastics are able to be fought with water to douse the fire and remove the heat.

No more leakage from submerged BNSF locomotive into the Kootenai River
BONNERS FERRY — According to a press release from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on Jan. 9, contracted divers from BNSF Railway attempted to empty the fuel tank and the oil from the crankcase of the locomotive in the Kootenai River, that had derailed on Jan. 1 due to a landslide. The result of the efforts of the divers produced no oil, only river water.

Hessian fly outbreak plagues winter wheat growers in Bonners Ferry
An outbreak of Hessian fly-caused yield losses in winter wheat, the main cash grain crop in our region, is plaguing our wheat growers. The fly lays its eggs in fall or spring, and the larvae feed on the base of the plant, reducing yields and weakening the stems, which causes extensive lodging. Historically, Hessian fly has not been a problem in winter wheat, thus few resistant varieties have not been developed for winter wheat as they have been for spring wheat. Dr. Kurt Schroeder will be discussing this issue, which he’s only observed in this region, as well as other current topics affecting wheat and barley producers at this year’s grain commission-sponsored Cereal School.

Each January, Martin Luther King Day honors the historic Civil Rights leader. King is best known for his “I Have A Dream” speech, delivered during the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. King’s “dream” was that his children, and all U.S. citizens, would “not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.”
