IDFG: Snapping turtles pose problem in area
McCormack, a non-game biologist for Fish and Game in the Idaho Panhandle, said the turtles are, for now, minor pests – as far as IDFG can tell. Since they pose a threat to many native species, Fish and Game is hoping to nip them in the bud next spring, before anything could get too out of hand. “The main issue they pose,” he said, “is that they are pretty effective predators.” While snapping turtles are not aggressive, they can be dangerous especially for curious pets or kids, McCormack said. The conservation officer also warned that if someone puts their finger too close and the snapping turtle is big enough, they could lose their finger.

We need Fioravanti, Herndon and Bundy to win Idaho. If all three win their bid for office, we have a chance to reestablish conservative values in Idaho. Mechanized birds: Wildland firefighting with drone intelligence
The robotic birds of the sky, known colloquially as drones, were a menace to the wildland firefighting community. The mere appearance of a recreational drone in the skies near a wildfire called for the grounding of all firefighting aircraft, giving birth to catchy sayings like “If you fly, we can’t,” and “It’s not worth the view.” While these sayings are still true, drones – also called UAS or unmanned aerial systems – are playing an increasingly important role in fighting wildfires.

Bedke aims for Idaho’s No. 2 spot

Bedke believes he’s done just that, having served at times on the budget, Revenue & Taxation, Resources & Conservation and transportation committees. He’s mediated “really ticklish” water issues in southern Idaho and worked to “drought-proof” the growing state.

Bertling is the right choice for county
Let’s vow to not allow the negative rot to take root in our community. A major step this community can take in that direction is to write in Tim Bertling for county commissioner.
Fioravanti will oppose federal overreach
It is difficult to reconcile some of what I have read recently in this letters to the editor section with the Steve Fioravanti that I actually know as a human being.
Keep Bertling as county commissioner
The only criticism that has been brought against current commissioner, Tim Bertling, is that he voted to accept money from the federal government. Boundary County has utilized federal funds for many projects from river dikes to currently, a new ambulance. Examples are PILT (payment in lieu of taxes) for federal land in the county, Secure Rural Schools (roads and schools) federal highway funds for roads and bridges, federal funds for our airport and many others.
Fioravanti has read the small print
"The most terrifying words in the English language are 'I'm from the government and I'm here to help.'" Does anyone remember that quote from Ronald Reagan's 1981 inaugural speech?
Fioravanti will reclaim traditional Boundary County values
Fioravanti clearly perceives the real problems in Boundary County.
Steve Johnson: Voters’ choice
During the primary campaign, candidate Scott Herndon demonstrated viciousness and untruthfulness in his attacks on the incumbent senator. A lengthy text from him that blocked my reply made it clear he didn’t want to hear from me; his mind was set. Such absolutism and extremism are evident in his agenda: he would reject funding for Medicaid, public education, Meals on Wheels, highway and road improvements, and veterans’ services, among others. He believes a woman has no right to choose under any scenario. He wants to sell our public lands into private hands.
Claims of corruption not backed by facts
The following statement was read at Monday night’s Boundary County Republican Central Committee meeting by vice chairman Les Pinkerton.
We need Fioravanti as our constitutional watchman
We are putting our county in jeopardy. Sorry, but just because your family roots have been here forever does not automatically make you a leader.
Fioravanti is a fair and reasonable man of integrity
As Boundary County commissioner, Steve Fioravanti would not be thinking of how to enrich his family and friends as many so-called public representatives are apt to do. He would be striving to increase the entire county's prosperity.
Write-ins don't care about the people
The write-ins are not true conservatives or they would have accepted the outcome of the primary.
Tax cut suggestion is mere sloganeering
The letters by Fay Almond and Ingrid Glenn (Bonners Ferry Herald, Oct. 6) would have readers believe the county commissioners are in love with raising taxes and that candidate Fioravanti has the magic recipe for cutting taxes.
Bertling supported for honesty, work for county
About two weeks ago, a Boundary County Republican Committeeman commented about the “write in Tim Bertling signs all over the county.” He wrote that “most of the signs are placed on the properties of people who are members of the corrupt families … running this county for years.”

Supreme Court mulls federal water rules in Priest Lake case
Case could provide opportunity for court to rein in what types of waters are subject to a provision of Clean Water Act known as ‘Waters of the United States’
The U.S. Supreme Court opened its term Monday with an Idaho case that could significantly restrict the federal government’s power to enforce clean water laws and prove crucial in determining wetland protections. The oral arguments came just months after the court’s 6-3 conservative majority limited executive authority to address climate change in a case involving federal regulation of greenhouse gases. The clean water case, brought by an Idaho couple seeking to build a house on a plot of land they bought near Priest Lake in the state’s panhandle, provides an opportunity for the court to rein in what types of waters are subject to a provision of the Clean Water Act known as “Waters of the United States.”

End of an era: Judge Buchanan to retire in January
“I didn’t know any lawyers but people always told me I should be a lawyer because I debate all the time,” Buchanan said. “So, I took the LSAT test and did well and ended up going to law school.” The move paid off. After almost 30 years as a judge, Buchanan will retire Jan. 30, 2023 – ten years to the day after she first took the job. A district judge must serve 10 years before they can retire. Buchanan, who is at least a third-generation Idahoan, grew up in Moscow and went to law school at University of Idaho and then clerked for a few years at the Idaho Supreme Court.
