Celebrating Idaho dairy production by addressing its challenges
June is National Dairy Month, providing an opportunity to celebrate one of Idaho’s economic engines. The University of Idaho reports, “Idaho, ranking third in the United States for milk production, garnered its highest-ever milk revenues in 2022. With estimated cash receipts for 2022 of $4.2 billion, revenues from milk production are the highest of all agricultural commodities produced in Idaho.” However, inflation, supply chain issues, feed expenses and other contributors to soaring input costs drive up the cost to produce milk, making the break-even cost of milk production higher. As we look to the future of the dairy industry, we must continue to work to address the challenges facing Idaho dairy producers:

Judge narrows, doesn't lift gag order in slayings case
An Idaho judge has denied a request from roughly two dozen news organizations to lift a gag order in the criminal case of a man accused of stabbing four University of Idaho students to death. The judge did, however, significantly narrow the gag order in response to the news organizations' concerns. The ruling in Bryan Kohberger's case was handed down late Friday afternoon. Second District Judge John Judge said it was legally prudent to restrict attorneys from making some statements about the case in order to preserve Kohberger's right to a fair trial. Still, Judge also said the original gag order was arguably overbroad and vague.

High court upholds Festival firearm ban
The Idaho Supreme Court unanimously affirmed a lower court decision on a four-year lawsuit challenging a ban on firearms during the Festival at Sandpoint’s summer music series. "This appeal concerns whether a private party that leases public property from an Idaho municipality may govern those who come and go from its property during the lease," Justice John R. Stegner wrote for the court. "The short answer is yes." The ruling, which was issued Thursday morning, affirmed a First District Court ruling that found the Festival at Sandpoint has the right to set rules for those entering Memorial Field during the two weeks it leases the field for the summer music series. Among those requirements is a ban on attendees possessing weapons inside the venue.

The controversy started before the meeting even began. As three to four dozen people waited on the sidewalks outside the school district office, and at least another dozen lined the hallway to the board meeting room, Rutledge engaged in a mostly civil, albeit sometimes loudly contentious exchange about the volunteer guards.

IRA green energy tax provisions hurt America, help China
Members of Congress on both sides of the aisle have long recognized the need to reform our energy tax laws. But rather than work on stakeholder-informed, bipartisan energy tax policies that would support a technology-neutral approach, Democrats pursued a partisan path through their misnamed Inflation Reduction Act (IRA). Republicans warned the IRA would take us down a dangerous, fiscally irresponsible path to provide ever-ballooning subsidies, antagonize allies and, ironically, reward the very industries that are reliant on China. Unfortunately, what we warned of has come to pass, leaving Americans to deal with the fallout of these predicted consequences:

Account shows Washington's faith, dedication
Published in 1800 by the Rev. Mason Locke Weems, a firsthand account of the "Father of our Country": In the winter of ’77, while Washington, with the American army lay encamped at Valley Forge, a certain good old friend, name of Potts, had occasion to pass through the woods near headquarters. Treading his way along the venerable grove, suddenly he heard the sound of a human voice and became like the voice of one speaking much in earnest. As he approached the spot with a cautious step, whom should he behold, but the commander in chief of the American armies on his knees at prayer! Motionless with surprise, Potts stood still, until the general, having ended his devotions, arose, and with a countenance of angel serenity, retired to headquarters: friend Potts then went home, and on entering his parlor called out to his wife, “Sarah, my dear! Sarah! All’s well! All’s well! George Washington will yet prevail!”
