Police: Stabbings, Idaho killings unrelated
Almost two weeks after four University of Idaho students were stabbed to death in their rooms, Moscow police and federal agents continue to follow leads, but on Friday they ruled out any connection to two other stabbings in the Pacific Northwest. Police say they've received inquiries about a 1999 double stabbing in Pullman, Washington. They've also were asked about the 2021 double stabbing in Salem, Oregon. Police say the cases share similarities with the Idaho homicides, but they don't appear related. The four students were found dead Nov. 13 in a rental house near campus. A county coroner says they were likely asleep when they were attacked. No suspect has been identified.
Thousands of vets seeks toxic exposure benefits, health care
VA has set up website at va.gov/pact as well as a phone number, 800-698-2411, for veterans to call for more information or to file claim
The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs is processing claims at the fastest rate in its history, hoping to avoid a significant backlog as hundreds of thousands of veterans apply for health care and benefits under the landmark toxic exposure law Congress passed earlier this year. The day after President Joe Biden signed the bill into law in August, veterans set an all-time record for benefits claims filed online and more than 136,000 have applied for benefits under the toxic exposure law as of mid-November. The VA expects the number of veterans and surviving family members applying could reach more than 700,000 in the coming months.

Coroner: UI students were stabbed to death in their beds
Four University of Idaho students who were found dead in a rental house last Sunday were stabbed to death in their beds and likely were asleep when the attacks occurred. That's according to Latah County Coroner Cathy Mabbutt. She also told NewsNation that each victim suffered multiple stab wounds from a "pretty large knife." Efforts to reach Mabbutt by telephone on Friday were diverted to an Idaho State Police spokesman, who did not immediately return messages. Mabbutt's comments expanded on the autopsy reports released on Thursday, which concluded the four students were murdered by being stabbed to death. The killings have shaken Moscow, an Idaho Panhandle town of 25,000 residents that last saw a homicide about five years ago.

Killer who killed UI students still at large
Police say the killer or killers who stabbed four University of Idaho students to death remains at large, and the violence has prompted many students to leave town. The Moscow Police Department said Tuesday that the attack was targeted and maintained there is no imminent risk to the community. But so many students have left campus that university officials said a candlelight vigil originally scheduled for Wednesday would instead be held after the Thanksgiving break. Police say a knife or sharp weapon was used in the attack on the students. Autopsies expected to be completed later this week could provide more information about how the victims were killed.

81 years of looking down the scope
Mildred Bryant celebrates 80th hunting anniversary by harvesting mule deer
Hunting has no set expiration date — if you can shoulder a firearm, still see good enough to look down the sights and traverse a fair amount of open country, then your clock’s still ticking. If you’re 41 and fighting for a Super Bowl ring, you’re ancient. If you’re 41 and looking for that seven-point bull, well, you’re in your prime. Then there’s Mildred Bryant. The 90-year-old New Plymouth resident has been hunting big game for nearly double that timespan, and she recently harvested a handsome 3x4 mule deer near Malta after 80 years of looking down the scope. Next time you’re out stalking a buck and your legs get a little sore, think of Mildred’s story.

Like elsewhere in the U.S., North Idaho is beginning to see increases in hospitalizations from climbing rates of respiratory syncytial virus infections, or RSV. State of Deer and Elk: Counting herds, and how hunters help through mandatory hunter reports
Biologists use a variety of methods to know the health of the herds, and hunters play an important role
Deer and elk live throughout Idaho in habitats ranging from desert to mixed conifer forests, and a big part of a wildlife manager’s job is to estimate how many are out there. What role do hunters play in that? More than you might realize. If each deer and elk hunter spends a few moments filling out a mandatory hunter report, they make a valuable contribution to wildlife management that can lead to more hunting opportunity, but more on that later.
